10 Foods to Never Feed Your Dog

10 Foods to Never Feed Your Dog

Dogs! Many of us absolutely love our dogs, we love to spoil them and show our love by giving them all the treats that we love. But, some are really bad for them or can even kill them! So, if you want to know what to never feed your dog, read on! But, before we begin, please take a moment to pin this for all our fellow dog lovers.

10 Foods NEVER to feed your dog

  1. Chocolate. You may have heard it somewhere before, whether it was your parents yelling, "Remember not to feed the dog chocolate!" Or  you might have heard it on television, or on the internet. But the question remains, why can't you share chocolate with your dog? Well, it's because there is theobromine in chocolate, which is a stimulant that affects the nervous system and heart muscle, and increases the frequency of urination. Dogs can't metabolize theobromine as effectively as humans, and this allows it to build up in their system until it reaches toxic levels. It also contains caffine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines.
  2. Grapes. Grapes have a high toxicity level to dogs, but the most unusual thing about the toxicity of raisins and grapes is that it only affects particular dogs. Still, just for your dog's safety, I recommend not to feed them to any dog.
  3. Onions. Why onions? Well, onions are not good for dogs because they damage your dog's red blood cells.
  4. Alcohol. Even drinking a small amount of alcohol can result in significant intoxication for a dog, which can lead to vomiting, seizures and even death!
  5. Avocado. Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxin called persin that can cause upset stomach and breathing difficulties.
  6. Xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is often used to sweeten candy, chewing gum, toothpaste and baked goods. While deemed safe for human consumption, it can be deadly for dogs. Eating foods that contain xylitol can lead to a sudden and significant drop in a dog's blood sugar.
  7. Caffeine. Caffeine can speed your dog's heart rate and stimulate it's nervous system. Restlessness, excessive thirst, a lack of bladder control, vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms of caffeine ingestion. But if they ingest too much caffeine, abnormal heart rhythm or lung failure may be experienced, and can lead to your dog's death.
  8. Yeast. Yeast is also a concern if a dog eats raw yeast dough. As the yeast cells ferment, they actually produce alcohol, which causes a dog's blood alcohol level to rise and can cause alcohol poisoning and death.  What's more, the dough will expand in a dog's stomach and can cause severe bloating. This puts pressure on the surrounding organs and can make it very difficult for the dog to breathe.
  9. Salt. Eating too much salt could lead to a condition known as salt poisoning or water deprivation in dogs. This can cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, fever and seizures. It can even be fatal in severe cases.
  10. Macadamia nuts. These contain an unknown toxin that can cause weakness, muscle tremors and vomiting in dogs. Because of their high fat content, macadamia nuts can also lead to pancreatitis, which is an inflamed pancreas.
